Social Networking

Best invention ever. I have been using Facebook for the past 6mths trying to find old school buddies for our 20 year reunion and have found quite a few who I now keep in contact with. In the library this would be handy as a promotional tool to display our library services and upcoming events or to catch up and chat with other librarians about everyday issues we come across working in libraries. Bring on modern technology.

Google Docs

Fantastic idea. I think this is great for when your working together with an ongoing document you can all have input without having to be together on the same computer. Would be handy for policy and procedure writing or in my case where I'm in a one staff library with part timers to work on documents as a team. This is disappointing I only have 1 week to go. I'm loving all these great ideas. I hope I remember how to use them when I have finished Learning 2.0.

Uses for Mashups

After exploring the different types of mashups I found 3 that would be useful in my library. Firstly the calendar could be used to promote library events using photos from the library, also google maps to display all of UMRL libraries for all to see on a map and finally voice thread would be good to use for a display with photos in the library for all users to view while in the library focusing on a theme eg. history of library or town. Very handy.

Mashups

These would be great to use for Promotional tools in your library, for posters, children's activities etc. It was a long process to achieve this task because I didn't install many pictues to flickr so I had to do that first.

Tumbarumba Library

192, originally uploaded by marvschin.

This is our very unique library which used to be a church at Laurel Hill between Tumbarumba and Batlow. It was relocated to Tumbarumba and we celebrated it's 21st birthday late last year.

Podcasts

I feel that podcasts would be very useful for libraries in isolated areas like myself where it can be difficult to attend courses and seminars and keep up to date with all the changes or just keep up with other librarians. Bring down the barriers of isolation.

Answer boards

Wouldn't it be great to have a Library answer board just for librarians. I bet there's already one out there. I would love to answer questions for others on slamming the boards, but being a small single staffed library I don't have the time. But it will be great for them to answer nagging questions for me with my limited resources and time.

Librarything

Librarything is a great way of recording all your books. I found it very useful as I have so many books and can't keep track of them. I have now begun listing them and tagging them on Librarything so I can sort them and see what I haven't got of certain authors I like. I can also read reviews and see if I would like to read other authors I don't normally read. Being able to access this list on your mobile is very handy when you go shopping and find a new book but can't remember whether you already have it (which I have done) only to discovered they had just changed the cover. Very handy for any book lover.

del.icio.us

Just been exploring Del.icio.us. Found this very useful. My computer at work is becoming overrun with bookmarks and I am having trouble finding things. With this handy tool I will be able to sort things out so I can find them again and Amanda can also access it as well. Great tool to have and use in your library.

It worked

I can't believe it, it finally worked. It was the operator of course but I am now getting the hang of it. Nothing can stop me now. Thanks heaps Ellen.

You Tube

Some great library video's on you tube. I even found some for Tumbarumba. Type in any topic and your sure to find a video. Great to see the one for the NSW Day of Action as we all couldn't be there but we did our bit with signatures and letters to the polly's. Well done to all for your support.

Wiki's

Very interesting. Great source of information. I found book lover's wiki the best one obviously being a librarian. It covers all book types with great reviews. Excellent way to promote your library and interest your customers to new books. I also found Library success: a best practices wiki a good one for any librarian with ideas and information for use in the library. Stuck for an idea just click on this site and get help. I know I will be using it heaps. Wiki's are great to get the information out there and to keep it current and up to date. Thanks NSWPL for teaching us everyday librarians about modern technology. What a time saver.

Week 5

Hi once again,
I have just started wk5 of learning 2.0 and it is all started sinking in. I may be a bit thick but it started to get confusing with all these passwords and new sites. I feel that there will be some great benefits for my library with all these new tools now I know what they are. A great way to promote your library and up coming events and share ideas with others. We have had a very busy week in our library with the a visit from Paul Brunton from the State Library of NSW along with the first edition copy of "Origin of Species". What a thrill. Amanda and I even got to hold the book which was published in 1859 and valued at approximately $180,000. WOW!!!!
